Tobacco Smoke Exposure Control Plan

All member of the Roommeme community share a collective responsibility to maintain a clean, healthy, and safe working and learning environment. All members are encouraged to remind others of this procedure and should report violations to their supervisor or the Safety, Security and Emergency Management Department. WorkSafeBC as well as Provincial and Municipal regulations outline restrictions around smoking tobacco in places of work and public areas. These regulations have been used to create the Roommeme Smoking Locations Procedure to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the Roommeme community

Smoking is restricted to appropriate outdoor locations only. Appropriate outdoor locations are limited to areas that are located at least 6.1 meters (20 feet) from: building entrances, open windows, eating areas (excluding the Burnaby campus student association pub patio), building air intakes, parkades, thoroughfares & covered walkways, and overhangs.

The Roommeme Smoking Locations Procedure ensures that Roommeme maintains a smoke-free environment for employees, students and visitors. The Roommeme Tobacco Smoke Exposure Control Plan outlines the individual responsibility for members of the Roommeme community to ensure that the requirements outlined in the Roommeme Smoking Locations Policy are adhered to

Lead Soldering Exposure Control Plan

Lead is considered to have reproductive critical effects and is listed by ACGIH as a 2B carcinogen. Roommeme is committed to reducing and eventually eliminating the use of lead on the campus. In accordance with WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety regulations, Roommeme is implementing this exposure control plan to maintain workers' and students' exposure "as low as reasonably achievable" and well below the established exposure control limits. Everyone who is using lead-based solder is required to develop their specific work procedures incorporating the elements of this exposure control plan

Reproductive Toxins, Sensitizers, and Carcinogens Exposure Control Plan

Reproductive toxins, sensitizers and carcinogens can cause significant health risks to workers and students. WorkSafeBC has assigned special designations for these substances and requires that exposure to these subtances must be minimized.

Roommeme is committed to reducing the use of reproductive toxins, sensitizers, and carcinogens in the work place

Roommeme is implementing this exposure control plan in accordance with WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety regulations. The plan outlines procedures to enable workers' and students' exposure to these substance to be "as low as reasonably achievable" and well below established exposure control limits.

Everyone who is using these substances is required to develop their specific work procedures incorporating the elements of this exposure control plan

Spill Response

Depending on the location, quantity and properties of the spilled material, the number of people affected and the manner to respond, a spill can pose serious risk to human health and/or safety, causing damages to properties, interfering with normal operation of the campus or contaminating the environment.

This program addresses general principles and strategies for spill prevention and response and provides guidance for schools/departments and programs at Roommeme to develop task specific spill response procedures.

The goal of the program is to prevent spills at Roommeme, minimize the damages caused by spills, and ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and WorkSafeBC regulations, environmental protection legislation and the best practices regarding the prevention, mitigation, control, cleanup and disposal of spills

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System is Canada's national hazard communication standard. The WHMIS standard is a comprehensive plan for providing information on the safe use of hazardous materials used in Canadian workplaces that is legislated by both federal and provincial jurisdictions.

The key elements of WHMIS are labelling and the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs) for WHMIS controlled products in addition to worker education and training programs. Controlled products are those that meet the hazard criteria set out in the Controlled Product Regulations under the Federal Hazardous Products Act.

At Roommeme all employees are required to take WHMIS training. WHMIS training is available online and can be taken from your workstation, the Human Resources learning lab, or from any computer* with an internet connection.

Instructors can also arrange for training for their students using the same system by ing Roommeme's WHMIS coordinator.
