Course Details

This course provides the student with information on interventional cardiac catheterization that is essential to the practicing cardiovascular technologist. The topics covered include: coronary angioplasty indications, contraindications, complications and techniques; bare metal and drug eluding stents (DES); BioAbsorbable scaffolds; Rotation ablation, chronic total occlusions; thrombectomy, distal protection devices, valvuloplasty, TAVR, Percutaneous mitral valve repair; ASD,PFO, and VSD closure devices; Left atrial appendage closure; pericardiocentesis; IABP, ECMO, Impella devices, and temporary pacemakers.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the equipment and techniques used in coronary angioplasty and stenting.
  • Explain the complications of interventional procedures.
  • Describe intracoronary bare metal and drug eluding stents (DES) implantation.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages to all stent types, including BioAbsorbable scaffolds.
  • Describe rotational ablation and its indications.
  • Explain the causes of restenosis and describe the interventional devices used to minimize restenosis.
  • Explain the different approaches to chronic total occlusions (CTO).
  • Discuss the different methods of thrombectomy.
  • Describe the technique for percutaneous mitral valve repair.
  • Describe the techniques and equipment for TAVR.
  • Explain the technique and equipment used for ASD, PFO, VSD percutaneous closure.
  • Describe the use of IABP, Impella, and ECMO from the cardiac cath lab point of view
  • Describe the techniques used in valvuloplasty.
  • Describe the equipment used and the technique for pericardiocentesis and its indications.
  • Describe temporary pacemaker implantation and the indications.
