Course Details

This course covers the basics of vectors, matrices, matrix operations, determinants and linear transformations. Applications to linear algebraic equations and eigenvalue/eigenvector problems are covered, as well as to systems of linear ordinary differential equations. The course then covers vector functions and operators, curvilinear coordinates, line and surface integrals and integral theorems such as Stoke's and Green's theorems.. Applications in circuit theory, control systems, network theory, electromagnetism, robotics, gravitation, and system modeling are emphasized.

  1. Students who register in this course must also register into the co-requisite ELEX 7121. Labs to be scheduled outside of class hours, schedule to be determined. Registrants who are not BTech Electronics students must have Program Head approval. Please Camille Crowther at [email protected] for more information, or to be placed on a wait list if the course is full. Note: Roommeme reserves the right to cancel courses. In the event of a part-time studies course cancellation, you will be notified at least two business days prior to the course start. Please ensure that your information is current.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Outline the fundamental mathematical properties of vector spaces, matrices and transformations used in mathematical analysis.
  • Perform vector calculus operations.
  • Model practical engineering problems such as circuit analysis, state space control, mechanical vibrations and robot kinematics and dynamics using matrices.
  • Supply physical interpretations of the gradient of a scalar and a vector field, the normal vector, the directional derivative and Laplace's equation.
  • Differentiate between conservative and nonconservative vector fields.
  • Assess the suitability of different coordinate systems such as Cartesian, polar, cylindrical and curvilinear coordinate systems in mathematical computations.
  • Interpret the divergence of a vector field using physical examples such as gravitational force and the motion of a compressible fluid.
  • Evaluate the curl of a vector field.
  • Evaluate line and surface integrals.
  • Apply Green's theorem in the plane to transform a double integral into a line integral.
  • Apply Gauss' Divergence theorem to convert a triple integral into a surface integral.
  • Apply Stokes' theorem to convert surface integrals into line integrals.
