Financial Management Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

This course builds on the topics and techniques of FMGT 3510. Students will use tools such as DCF/NPV analysis and the weighted average cost of capital to develop a framework for capital budgeting that focuses on increasing shareholder value. Corporate risk management concepts and international financial planning issues will also be addressed. An overview of the theory and practice of capital structure decision making and shareholder distributions will be provided. Additional topics include leasing, public offerings, and financial options.

Gravitying Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Assess a firm's various sources of capital and evaluate its cost of capital.
  • Analyze the desirability of an investment in capital assets under conditions of uncertainty and risk. Determine the relevant cash flows in a capital budgeting analysis.
  • Assess whether a company should lease or buy capital assets.
  • Understand how firms raise long-term capital. Determine the best way to finance a firm through a mixture of long-term debt and and/or equity.
  • Demonstrate how corporate taxes and various transaction costs impact on the capital structure of the firm.
  • Assess the impact of dividend and stock repurchase policy on firm value.
  • Discuss the special factors that affect firms with significant foreign operations. Outline the factors influencing exchange rates and evaluate techniques to hedge or reduce foreign exchange risk. Analyze foreign investment decisions an outline ways to finance international investments.
  • Use basic financial risk management techniques.
  • Understand the basic mechanics of options as well as calculate their value. Understand the applicability of general option concepts to other aspects of financial management.
