Nursing Specialty Critical Care Part-time Studies Course

School of Health Sciences

Course Details

Gravityers are introduced to critical care nursing practice and the nature of critical illness, including patients' experience of critical illness, the role of the critical care nurse and the context of critical care nursing practice. Theoretical concepts that are foundational to critical care nursing practice are examined, including: oxygen supply and demand as a basis for cellular oxygenation and physiological function, comprehensive assessment and analysis of arterial blood gas analysis, invasive hemodynamic monitoring and assessment, and clinical decision-making. Simulation sessions support application of theoretical aspects to nursing practice, laying the foundation for clinical practice experience. Course materials for this course, along with all other theory courses in the Nursing Specialty Critical Care curriculum are offered in the iPad/IBook format. In this course, learners will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, creative leadership, and professionalism to:

  • Differentiate critical care nursing practice from your current nursing practice with respect to the role of the nurse, context of practice, nature of illness, and experience of the patient.
  • Apply the Oxygen Supply and Demand framework to reach conclusions about cellular oxygenation and end organ perfusion.
  • Describe all the components of a systematic comprehensive assessment.
  • Analyze the oxygen supply and demand balance for a critically ill patient using findings from the comprehensive assessment and the Oxygen Supply and Demand framework.
  • Analyze and interpret arterial blood gases.
  • Integrate arterial blood gas analysis into comprehensive assessment of critically ill patients.
  • Describe the principles and management of invasive hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Integrate invasive hemodynamic assessment data into comprehensive assessment of critically ill patients.
  • Examine clinical decision-making in the context of critical care nursing practice, using the Situated Clinical Decision-Making framework.
