Prepares for a beginning level of hemodialysis nursing in a hemodialysis facility through a four-week clinical experience. Requires written and practical assignments over the 12-week term. May require attendance in greater Vancouver to complete this component.

Gravitying Outcomes

As licensed health care practitioners, all learners will practice in accordance with professional standards of practice throughout the course. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • Discuss effective strategies that facilitate working collaboratively with clients on hemodialysis to promote health.
  • Utilize a phenomenological approach in order to interpret a client and their family’s experience of hemodialysis.
  • Program a hemodialysis machine according to the client’s prescription.
  • Apply the clinical decision-making process to assess a client’s health status in a clinical setting pre-, intra- and post-dialysis.
  • Assess a client’s vascular accesses for patency.
  • Use effective communication techniques that promote efficient multidisciplinary team partnerships and collaboration.
  • Utilize principles of aseptic technique and venipuncture in initiating, managing, and discontinuing hemodialysis.
  • Identify and describe the pharmacology of agents commonly used specifically in hemodialysis.
  • Perform the basic hemodialysis procedure using individualized dialysis prescriptions.
  • Identify and interpret common laboratory, radiological and diagnostic investigations and monitoring results correlated to hemodialysis.
  • Identify and manage common complications of hemodialysis.
  • Describe the rationale and applicable conditions for sodium profiling.
  • Apply clinical decision-making skills to respond to and manage changes in a client’s health pre-, intra- and post-dialysis.
  • Assess the clinical data and consult with the nephrology team about the adequacy of dialysis.
  • Describe possible strategies to improve the efficacy of hemodialysis.
  • Perform a comprehensive assessment of a hemodialysis client.
