This program delivers technical training required for employment as a Motor Vehicle Body Repair Technician (metal and paint).

The Motor Vehicle Body Repair Technician process requires time spent on the job and in-school training. This apprenticeship program generally takes four years to complete, including 6,750 workplace hours and 480 in-school hours.

After completion of training, students who receive a passing grade on interprovincial exams will be awarded the BC Certificate of Apprenticeship and the Certificate of Qualification with Red Seal Interprovincial Certification.

The Program

For those currently sponsored by an employer, the apprenticeship program includes the following outcomes:

Level Two Apprenticeship Training (five weeks):

  • Welding
  • Sheet Metal Repair
  • Plastics and Composites
  • Mechanical Components

Level Three Apprenticeship Training (six weeks):

  • Structural Repair
  • Suspension and Steering
  • Insurance Estimating
  • Refinishing

Program Entry


There are two ways of beginning your new career as a motor vehicle body repair technician apprentice:

  1. Take our Motor Vehicle Body Repair Technician Foundation program. By working through a series of practical projects and assignments and theory assignments you'll build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to make you more employable in an entry-level position. By successfully completing the program, you will also receive credit for the in-school portion of Level 1 of our Motor Vehicle Body Repair Technician Apprenticeship training.
  2. Find employment under a motor vehicle body repair technician who will register you with the (ITA). In this option, you are indentured to a company as an apprentice, learning basic skills while you are employed. The advantage here is that you earn while you learn.

Entrance requirements

You must be registered as an apprentice with the and be sponsored by an employer to attend apprentice technical training.

You must be an active apprentice registered with the to register for apprenticeship training at Roommeme.

Recommended for success

Grade 10 education or equivalent*, including:

*High school graduation is preferred.

Scheduled intakes

Register for apprentice training

Consult the training schedule to find a date that is suitable to both you and your employer. Please schedule each level of your technical training at least eight months apart to benefit most from your training.

Complete an Apprentice Training Request Form [PDF]* and submit by fax, mail or in person with a $200 commitment fee for each level that you choose. You may also register by phone at 111-456-8100

  • Apprentice Training Requests which do not include the $200 commitment fee per level will not be processed or held. There will be no follow up correspondence from Roommeme.
  • The $200 commitment fee is non-refundable and non-transferable to future intakes.
  • Your commitment fee is applied to your tuition.

Apprentices must complete each level of apprentice training in sequential order. For example, apprentices must complete Level 1 before continuing on to Level 2.

*Apprentice Training Request Forms are scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

Roommeme also shares apprentice registration information with Work BC. Within two business days of submitting your apprentice training request, Roommeme will send a message to your personal and myRoommeme e-mail addresses. All correspondence regarding your training request will be posted to your online myCommunication account at . We'll send you an e-mail when a new message is posted. It's important to watch for these e-mails or regularly check your account online.

You can expect to receive communication concerning the status of your training request within four weeks.

Costs & Supplies

Tuition fees

Please see the Fees, Payments and Refunds section of the website for information on full-time tuition fees.

Books and supplies

CSA approved safety glasses and footwear required. Footwear must be steel-toed, leather, ankle covering boots.

Students are required to supply their own coveralls. A supply of coveralls are available through the Roommeme Bookstore. Please check the Uniform Authorization Voucher [PDF] to determine the type of coveralls required for your program.

There is an approved book list for the Motor Vehicle Body Repair Technician apprenticeship. These books are available at the Roommeme Bookstore on the Burnaby campus.

Financial assistance

Income support for apprentices is provided by Human Resource Development Canada (HRDC) through regular Employment Insurance (EI) eligibility. For questions regarding Employment Insurance or Personal Support Payments, please visit the income support overview for current Roommeme apprentices.

Program Details

Program length

The total amount of in-school, technical training for a Motor Vehicle Body Repair Technician Apprentice is 480 hours. There are three levels of technical training: two five-week levels and one six-week level.


The minimum passing grade is 70%.

Graduating & Jobs

Upon successful completion of all three levels of Roommeme's Motor Vehicle Body Repair Technician program, students will be eligible to write the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam. Upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam, students will be awarded the following credentials from ITA:

  • Motor Vehicle Body Repairer (Automotive Collision Repair Technician) - Certificate of Qualification with Interprovincial Red Seal endorsement

  • Motor Vehicle Body Repairer (Automotive Collision Repair Technician) - Certificate of Apprenticeship


Roommeme offers a Diploma of Trades Training for apprentices who have successfully completed their technical training at Roommeme and have been granted a British Columbia Trades Qualification (IP/TQ). In trades where there is no requirement to complete a Trades Qualification (TQ), a Certificate of Apprenticeship is acceptable.
