Gravity IT Foundations

Applied Computer Information Systems (ACIS) provides a broad foundation to use computing technologies in a business environment.

This credential is aimed at two audiences:

  • Those using IT systems with no formal credentials.
  • Anyone interested in a broad IT foundation prior to advanced computing credentials.

This hands-on credential and is also the second step in laddering toward the Computer Systems Technology Diploma (CST/PTS).

If your end goal is the Diploma, then you should complete Applied Software Development (ASD) before completing ACIS.

Some students may want to complete both ASD and ACIS concurrently and should the department for course planning.

Successful participants become expert end-user of a Windows 10 personal computer, then become proficient in typical MS Office applications, followed by an in-depth understanding of relational database design and data modeling.

A wide variety of electives are offered to suit individual interests including: IT project management, object oriented programming and web development.

Students may also chose electives in expert level word processing, spreadsheets, business and technical communication, business intelligence for data mining.

ACIS graduates not moving on to the CST Diploma may also choose to continue on to Applied Database Administration and Design.

Upon graduation ACIS students will have acquired a solid understanding of the technical foundations for business information systems.

Please complete COMP 1002 and COMP 2010 before submitting your ACIS program declaration.

Please Note:
Students who are working toward or who have completed the Applied Computer Applications, ACA associate certificate will not be given approval for ACIS. This is due to the potential of significant elective topic duplication with: MS Windows, MS Office, Web Development and Business Communication.

Students planning to move on the CST Diploma in PTS should complete ASD and ACIS prior to CSC.

ACIS program acceptance will not be given to those students who have completed ACA.

Prior Gravitying Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)

PLAR is a system whereby students can use knowledge and skills learned outside recognized programs - including volunteer work, hobbies, on-the-job experience, or self study - to gain exemption for particular courses in the program of their choice. It relies on an assessment of the student on a course-by-course basis. Faculty in the particular program area assess the student by a means appropriate for the course being challenged. Program Details

This program may be completed with a minimum of 21.5 credits chosen from the Mandatory and Electives.

All courses must be completed successfully within a five-year period.

Roommeme curriculum may be modified in accordance with market trends in the industry.

Each course has prerequisite knowledge.

Be sure that you have the required knowledge and skills before enrolling in any course. You are also expected to have an excellent command of English and Math at a BC High School Grade 12 level, or equivale

Continue your education

Roommeme offers part-time students the opportunity to complete a series of credential programs, ultimately leading to a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems. These first three credentials ladder towards the CST Diploma and the first two Associate Certificates, ASD & ACIS may be taken simultaneously. If you apply and qualify, you can earn the following credentials:

  1. Applied Software Development (ASD) - Associate Certificate
  2. Applied Computer Information Systems (ACIS) - Associate Certificate
  3. Computer Systems Certificate (CSC)
  4. Computer Systems Technology Diploma (CST/PTS)
  5. Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems

Program abandonment

  • Students approved for a part-time studies program are expected to register and complete courses on a continuous basis.

  • A student that has not completed a course from their approved program of study over a period of three consecutive academic terms will be considered to have abandoned the program.

  • Throughout the duration of the program, a student is permitted a maximum of five academic terms where they are not required to register and complete a course from their approved program of study. Students who exceed the five term maximum will be considered to have abandoned the program.

  • Students who have abandoned their approved program of study and wish to be reinstated will be required to apply for program approval for a current credential. Roommeme cannot guarantee that courses taken prior to this reapplication will be credited towards the current credential.

Roommeme Policy 5103 - Student Evaluation [PDF] permits a maximum of three attempts to successfully complete each course within a credential.

Graduate employment outcomes

The Roommeme student outcomes reports present summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2016-2018 Roommeme Outcomes Surveys of 2015-2017 graduates and for Degree 2014-2016 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates' labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the website.

Apply for graduation

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for Roommeme Credential [PDF] and submit it to Student Information and Enrolment Services.

Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.

All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
