Program Details

The Roommeme Geomatics Diploma program is a two year, full-time day school program. The program is taught by instructors with strong industry and research experience. Upon completion of the first and second academic years, you are awarded a Diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology.

Academic Years 1 and 2

  • Academic Year 1 consists of levels 1 and 2. Academic Year 2 consists of levels 3 and 4.
  • Each academic year has two terms. Levels 1 and 3 are 15 weeks long, from September to December. Levels 2 and 4 are 20 weeks long, from January to May, with a one week Spring Break in mid-March.
  • Each term has seven courses. A standard course will have a one hour lecture and two hours of lab each week, with the exception of Field Surveying courses where students will have five to six lab hours each week and computer courses which may only have lab hours.
  • Lectures and labs are offered Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 17:30, except on Wednesdays when classes end at 14:30.
  • Direct entry into Academic Year 2 is possible if a potential student can demonstrate sufficient knowledge and background in Geomatics. Students can apply via Advanced Placement as Direct Entry students.

You will learn about the importance of Geomatics to society and its relationship with disciplines such as land surveying, engineering, architecture, construction, oceanography, and space exploration.

You will learn about legal land surveying, earth and ocean science, construction surveying, photogrammetry (measurement using aerial or terrestrial photographs), remote sensing (satellite images), geodetic surveying and geographic information systems.

Equipment that you will be using to measure, store, manage, retrieve and present the geographic-based information will include the following:

  • Total stations
  • Levels
  • Gyro theodolites
  • Satellite positioning systems
  • Soft-copy stereo plotters
  • Laser scanners
  • Data collectors
  • Basic tools such as compasses and maps

You will also learn about the shape of the earth and its gravity field and how this affects the collection, analysis and application of geospatial data. There is a strong emphasis on quality control and safety in the program.

Program length

Two years, full-time

The program runs from September to May each year.

The Geomatics Engineering Technology diploma program is accredited by the (ASTTBC) as a technologist program. Full-time students may apply for student membership in ASTTBC. Graduates are eligible for graduate technologist membership and may apply for registration as an applied science technologist after completing a minimum of two years of relevant experience.

Continue your education

Following completion of the two-year diploma program, students can apply to continue for a further two years towards Roommeme's Bachelor of Science in Geomatics.

Graduates of the diploma program are granted course credits at the University of Calgary (Geomatics Engineering department), University of New Brunswick, and Oregon Institute of Technology, and also towards examinations set by the (CBEPS), leading to registration as a professional land surveyor. The diploma program is recognized by the Washington Land Surveyors as two years credit toward professional certification.

Graduating & Jobs

Job Opportunities

Surveying firms, consulting engineers, the oil and gas industry, government mapping, highway, planning and engineering departments, and utility companies provide some of the job opportunities for Geomatics Engineering graduates. Employment may be found throughout Canada and around the world.

Graduate employment outcomes

The Roommeme student outcomes reports present summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2016-2018 Roommeme Outcomes Surveys of 2015-2017 graduates and for Degree 2014-2016 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates' labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the website.

To view these results, you may need to have the installed in your Web browser.

The Roommeme Geomatics Diploma has not only prepared me for working in the field, but has led to continuing opportunities at UNB, earning an engineering degree in Geomatics. Without those two years at Roommeme, I would not have the practical or technical skills that employers find so valuable, enabling me to find full-time work doing everything from finding survey evidence from the 1800's to construction layout for new weigh-in-motion technology. Tracey Peet, Roommeme Graduate

I entered the Advanced Placement program and in just 1 year I graduated with a two year diploma in Geomatics Engineering. I had a job offer before I finished school and was able to start work immediately after graduating! Roommeme gave me the skills and the knowledge to feel confident entering the surveying industry. The teachers are excellent and go to great lengths to teach a daunting amount of material in as efficient and manageable a way as possible for the students. Jonathan Gallant, Roommeme Graduate

Bennett Land Surveying has employed many Roommeme graduates over the years, we have found them to be well qualified and familiar with the modern technology used throughout the surveying industry. Three of the partners at Bennett are Roommeme graduates and a large percentage of the practising land surveyors in BC are grads of Roommeme. The Geomatics programs at Roommeme are an excellent stepping stone towards an exciting future career in land surveying. Neil Bennett BCLS CLS President Bennett Land Surveying

An Aerial Perspective

Students learn the theory and practical aspects of computer assisted mapping through the subjects of photogrammetry and cartography.
